What hail actually does to a roof
Bruising, which is the damage that matters
A hailstone striking an asphalt shingle can fracture the fibreglass mat underneath without displacing many granules. The result is a soft spot that feels like a dent in a car panel when you press it. It is not visible from the ground and it is often not obvious from a photograph.
Bruising is functional damage. The mat is the shingle's structure. Once fractured, that spot fails early regardless of how the rest of the roof looks. This is the specific thing an adjuster is trained to find, and it is the basis on which a roof gets approved for replacement.
Granule displacement
Impact knocks granules off and exposes the asphalt below to ultraviolet light. Granules in the eavestrough after a storm are an indicator, though granule loss also happens with age.
Cracking and puncture
Larger stones split shingles outright or puncture them. Older, more brittle shingles crack more readily.
Damage to everything else
Adjusters look at more than the field of the roof. Vent caps, ridge caps, eavestroughs, downspouts, fascia, siding, window screens, air conditioner fins and gas meter housings all record hail. Soft metal damage on a vent cap is often the clearest evidence that a roof took a hit, because soft metal dents where a shingle only bruises.

What we do
Inspect and document. A full roof inspection with photographs of each slope, test squares where appropriate, and documentation of collateral damage on soft metals. See roof inspection in Calgary.
Provide a written scope. A description an adjuster can work from, listing what is damaged and what the repair or replacement requires.
Repair or replace. Localised damage on an otherwise sound roof is a repair. Widespread bruising is a replacement. See roof replacement in Calgary.
We document the damage and provide the scope. The claim itself stays between the homeowner and the insurer. We do not negotiate on your behalf, we do not tell you your deductible will be waived, and we do not front deductibles. All three of those are things storm-chasing outfits offer in Calgary after a big event, and two of them are illegal.

After a Calgary hailstorm
- Photograph everything from the ground, including any hail on the property, before it melts. Note the date and time.
- Report to your insurer promptly. Policies carry notification requirements.

- Be careful who knocks on your door. After a major Calgary hail event, out-of-province crews arrive within days. Ask for a City of Calgary business licence number, a WCB account number, and a certificate of insurance before anyone touches the roof. Ours are below.
- Do not sign anything that assigns your claim to a contractor before you understand what you are signing.

Impact-rated shingles
Class 4 impact-rated shingles are tested to UL 2218. In a hail market they reduce the frequency of claimable damage, and some insurers offer premium credits. Worth pricing at replacement time in Calgary specifically. Draft Expect Class 4 to add roughly 10 to 15 percent over a standard architectural shingle, about $1,000 to $1,800 on a typical detached home. IKO Dynasty and Malarkey Vista are the Class 4 lines most often specified in Alberta. Ask your broker whether your insurer applies a premium credit before you decide; several Canadian insurers do, and over the life of the roof it can offset a good part of the upgrade.

You mostly cannot tell from the ground. Bruising is found by hand on the roof. Check your soft metals first: dented vent caps and eavestroughs are the visible tell.
How long do I have to claim?
Policies set notification requirements and they vary. Report promptly.
Will my premium go up if I claim?
Widespread catastrophic events are rated differently from individual claims. Ask your broker before deciding not to claim.
My neighbour got a new roof and I did not. Why?
Hail falls in swaths and slope orientation matters. Two adjacent houses can take very different impacts.
Do you do free hail inspections?
Draft Yes. After a storm we get on the roof and tell you whether there is claimable damage, at no charge and with no obligation. If there is, you get the photographs and the documentation to give your adjuster. If there is not, we tell you that too rather than talk you into a claim that will be denied.
One caution for a hail week: be careful with anyone who knocks on your door offering a free inspection and a waived deductible. Waiving a deductible is insurance fraud in Alberta, and the roofers who offer it are generally gone by the time the roof leaks.
