SBS Roofing
SBS roofing is a low-slope membrane system built from asphalt modified with styrene-butadiene-styrene, a rubber polymer. The polymer gives the asphalt elasticity it does not have on its own, so the membrane stretches and recovers instead of cracking when the roof deck moves. SBS is the dominant low-slope system on Canadian residential and small commercial roofs, and it is the system Marku Roofing Repair Ltd. installs and repairs in Calgary.

01
What SBS actually is
Standard asphalt is a thermoplastic. It softens when hot and goes brittle when cold. On a Calgary roof that cycles from above 60 degrees Celsius at the membrane surface in July to below minus 30 in January, unmodified asphalt cracks.
Adding SBS polymer at roughly 12 to 15 percent by weight turns the asphalt into an elastomer. Two properties change and both of them matter here:
Low-temperature flexibility. SBS membranes stay flexible well below freezing. The industry test is cold-flex or cold-bend temperature, and SBS products are commonly rated to around minus 30 degrees Celsius. APP-modified membranes, the other common polymer, are stiffer in cold and better suited to hot climates.
Elastic recovery. SBS returns to shape after being stretched. A roof deck that moves seasonally does not tear the membrane, it flexes it.
For a city with chinooks, that combination is the reason SBS won the Alberta market rather than APP.

02
The two-ply system
A conventional SBS roof is two plies, not one.
Base sheet. Mechanically fastened to the deck, or self-adhered, or set in adhesive. This ply handles attachment and provides the first watertight layer.
Cap sheet. Torch-applied or self-adhered over the base, with laps offset from the base sheet laps. The cap carries mineral granule surfacing that protects the asphalt from ultraviolet degradation.
The offset is the point. A single-ply asphalt roof puts every lap in one plane. Two plies with offset laps mean no single seam runs from the surface to the deck.

03
Torch-applied or self-adhered
Torch-applied. A propane torch melts the underside of the membrane as it is rolled out, and the molten asphalt bonds to the substrate. It produces the strongest bond and it works in cold weather. It also involves open flame on a roof, which requires fire watch procedure and rules it out over some substrates.
Self-adhered. A release film is peeled and the membrane sticks. No flame. It needs surface temperatures above the manufacturer's minimum, so its Calgary installation window is narrower.
Note that torch-applied SBS is not the same as hot tar. Hot tar, or built-up roofing, means heating asphalt in a kettle and mopping it in place. Our insured scope of operations is roofing and repair excluding hot tar. Torch-applied SBS falls inside that scope; built-up kettle work does not.

04
Where SBS belongs
SBS is a low-slope covering. Under the National Building Code, asphalt shingles require a slope of at least 1 in 3 for normal application and at least 1 in 6 with low-slope application. Below 1 in 6, shingles are not compliant and a membrane takes over. That threshold is why so many Calgary homes carry both: shingles on the main roof and SBS over the flat-roofed addition, garage, or deck-as-roof.
The tie-in between the two is the highest-risk detail on the building.

05
Service life and failure modes
SBS membranes fail in four recognisable ways.
Lap separation. Side or end laps lose adhesion and lift. Most common where the original torch pass was rushed or the substrate was damp.
Granule loss. The cap sheet loses its mineral surfacing and the asphalt below it is exposed to ultraviolet light. Once the asphalt is bare, the clock speeds up.
Blistering. Trapped air or moisture between plies expands under heat. A split blister is a leak.
Alligatoring. Surface crazing in a pattern of interlocking cracks, indicating oxidation of the asphalt.
Draft A correctly installed two-ply SBS system should give 20 to 30 years in Calgary. The variable is not the membrane, it is drainage and maintenance: a roof that clears water within 48 hours and gets its drains cleared twice a year will reach the top of that band, and one that ponds all winter will not reach the bottom of it.
IKO Torchflex is the two-ply line most commonly specified on Alberta roofs, with Soprema and Bakor also widely used here. The base sheet and cap sheet have to come from the same system; mixing manufacturers across the two plies voids the warranty on both.

06
Repair
SBS repairs are made with the same material family. A cut-and-patch repair opens the defect, dries the substrate, and installs a torch-applied or self-adhered repair sheet lapped a minimum distance past the cut in every direction. Caulk and mastic are containment, not repair.

Frequently asked questions
Still unclear? A five minute phone call usually settles it faster than reading.
Ask us directlyIs SBS better than TPO or EPDM?
SBS is a modified asphalt system, TPO and EPDM are single-ply synthetics. SBS gives redundancy through two plies and tolerates rooftop traffic well. Single-ply gives lighter weight and faster installation. In Alberta, SBS dominates residential low-slope because of its cold-temperature flexibility and its repairability.
Can SBS be installed over an existing roof?
Over sound existing membrane, sometimes. Over wet insulation, never. Wet insulation stays wet under a new membrane and destroys the deck.
How many plies do I need?
Two. A single-ply SBS roof exists but it puts every lap in one plane.
What is the difference between SBS and APP?
Both are modified bitumen. SBS uses a rubber modifier and stays flexible in cold. APP uses a plastic modifier, is stiffer in cold, and suits hot climates. Alberta uses SBS.
